"So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers." "If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small," O'Keeffe explained. 2, which was exhibited in 1925, followed by works such as B lack Iris (1926) and Oriental Poppies (1928). Inspired by the vibrancy of the modern art movement, she began to experiment with perspective, painting larger-scale close-ups of flowers, the first of which was Petunia No. She joined Stieglitz's circle of artist friends including Steichen, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, John Marin and Paul Strand. As an art dealer, he championed her work and promoted her career. O'Keeffe began experimenting with her art, breaking from realism and developing her own visual expression through more abstract compositions.Īs an artist, Stieglitz, who was 23 years older than O'Keeffe, found in her a muse, taking over 300 photographs of her, including both portraits and nudes. A faculty member of Teachers College at Columbia University, Bement introduced O'Keeffe to the revolutionary ideas of his Columbia colleague, Arthur Wesley Dow, whose approach to composition and design was influenced by the principles of Japanese art. In 1912, she took an art class at the summer school of the University of Virginia, where she studied with Alon Bement. After two years, she returned to Virginia, eventually moving with her family to Charlottesville. Unable to afford to continue her art studies, O'Keeffe returned to Chicago in 1908 to work as a commercial artist. Located at 291 5th Avenue, Steichen's former studio, 291 was a pioneering gallery that elevated the art of photography and introduced the avant-garde work of modern European and American artists.Īfter a year of study in New York City, O'Keeffe returned to Virginia where her family had fallen on hard times: her mother was bedridden with tuberculosis and her father's business had gone bankrupt. Knuckles isn’t in great shape either. While she continued to develop as an artist in the classroom, O'Keeffe expanded her ideas about art by visiting galleries, in particular, 291, founded by photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. I just love the idea of a worn out Sonic, his knees are completely gone after running so much, and he’s resorted to booze. This is my favourite one, I think it’s just my humour. What’s better than console wars? When consoles come together to celebrate? What’s up for debate here is why they chose to play on an Xbox One… Miles, Fox and Gray Fox all chasing after ex-PM Theresa May is just bizzare, not even considering Brian May and the badgers.Ĭrossing the real world reality of speed limits with Mario Kart and Wacky Races is just an image I never thought I would see, and yet here it is. We don’t need to make this political, I just love the absolute randomness of this image. ![]() JIM LL PAINT IT SANTA TVThe Chuckle Brothers were an incredibly popular TV duo who got into plenty of antics, and seeing them in Portal just fits perfectly. Yeah, I’m not sure about this one either, but hey GoldenEye! This one’s a thinking outside the box entrey, as there’s no actual video game characters, but the concept is great, and I’d actually play the hell out of this game if it was real. I may have included this one because of my love of the 80’s – but hey there are video game characters in this if you look hard enough, it counts! That was the request for this one, and honestly it’s perfect.Ĩ – 80’s montage, spot the video game characters! ‘Can you paint Barry-O Kart? Basically Mario Kart only instead of Mario it’s Barry off Eastenders and instead of the other Mario characters it’s everyone off Eastenders and the whole picture has a vaguely tragic aura.’ A lot of this art will probably make more sense to UK audiences, including this Street Fighter version of soap opera Coronation Street. This one is straight in at number 10 because of the HORRENDOUS pun, I love it. ![]()
